Lufthansa Cargo Launches Direct Route from Asia to the U.S.
Lufthansa Cargo has announced its inaugural direct service connecting Asia to the United States, responding to rising demand from the region. The new route will utilize a Boeing 777 freighter, creating a loop between Frankfurt, Ho Chi Minh City, and Los Angeles International Airport.
Increased Frequencies to Meet E-Commerce Demand
In addition to the new service, Lufthansa Cargo plans to boost flight frequencies to multiple destinations, particularly in India and Taiwan, to accommodate the growing e-commerce market. Weekly freighter capacity to Mumbai and Taipei will increase by one flight each, while Chennai will be serviced twice weekly in conjunction with Hyderabad or Mumbai.
Growth Strategy Amidst Market Dynamics
“This is our first direct connection from the Asian market to the U.S. network, providing customers with a faster, high-quality service between the continents,” stated Lufthansa in a press release. The expansion aligns with the carrier’s long-term growth strategy in a rapidly changing market environment.
Capacity Enhancements and Network Optimization
With the introduction of its 18th Boeing 777 freighter, Lufthansa Cargo can now offer 50 weekly frequencies to Asia. The carrier is also increasing its freighter rotation from Frankfurt via Tel Aviv to Cairo by one flight per week.
Lufthansa Cargo CEO Ashwin Bhat emphasized the airline’s commitment to optimizing its schedule and enhancing direct connections for global customers. “We aim to enable global business more efficiently and sustainably,” he said.
Anticipated Capacity Crunch in Peak Season
This expansion comes as freight forwarders anticipate a capacity crunch in the Asian market due to surging e-commerce volumes and a shift away from ocean shipping amid geopolitical tensions. Other airlines, such as Qatar Airways and Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, are also repositioning their capacities to capitalize on favorable market conditions in the Asia Pacific region.
Qatar Airways will suspend certain freighter services to Latin America while increasing frequencies to Asia, and Martinair plans to launch a new Boeing 747-400 freighter service between Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
Booking Information and Future Developments
The Winter 2024/2025 schedule will be available for booking starting October 6, with changes taking effect on October 27. As Lufthansa Cargo navigates this evolving landscape, the airline remains focused on providing reliable and efficient service to its customers.
