Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has appointed Tan Sri Azmil Khalid as its new Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman, marking a major leadership transition as the airport operator advances its post-privatisation growth strategy, infrastructure expansion projects and long-term vision to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a leading regional aviation hub.
Azmil succeeds Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, who steps down from the role following his appointment to the board of Khazanah Nasional Berhad. The leadership change comes at a pivotal moment for MAHB as it enters a new chapter after its privatisation and delisting from Bursa Malaysia in February 2025.
With more than three decades of experience spanning infrastructure, transportation, investment and corporate leadership, Azmil brings extensive expertise in managing large-scale projects and strategic business transformation.
Experienced Infrastructure Leader Takes the Helm
Azmil currently serves as Group Chairman of AFA Group, whose subsidiary AFA Prime Bhd manages concession agreements for the KL–Karak Highway and the East Coast Expressway Phase 1. He is also President and Chief Executive Officer of AFK Group, a boutique investment company.
His broader corporate experience includes serving as Chairman of UEM Edgenta Bhd and holding directorship positions at Sapura Industrial Bhd, Elridge Energy Holdings Bhd and environmental solutions provider Cenviro Sdn Bhd.
Throughout his career, Azmil has played key leadership roles in major infrastructure and transport organisations. Between 2011 and 2017, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of The AlloyMtd Group and ANIH Bhd, overseeing significant highway concession operations. Prior to that, he held senior executive positions at MTD Capital Bhd, including Group Managing Director and later Group President and Chief Executive Officer.
Leadership Transition During a Strategic Growth Phase
MAHB acknowledged the contribution of outgoing Chairman Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, who played a critical role in guiding the company through one of the most significant periods in its history, including its transition from a publicly listed entity to a privately held company under the Gateway Development Alliance consortium.
During his tenure, MAHB progressed several strategic initiatives aimed at modernising Malaysia’s airport infrastructure, including major expansion programmes at Penang International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport. These investments form part of the company’s broader strategy to accommodate rising passenger demand, improve airport capacity and enhance service quality.
Continuity Strengthened with Managing Director’s Extended Tenure
In addition to the chairmanship appointment, MAHB confirmed that the Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) has approved a two-year extension of Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani’s tenure, effective from 1 August 2026.
The extension is expected to provide leadership continuity as the company continues implementing its airport modernisation agenda, infrastructure projects and operational improvement programmes across its airport network.
As the Asia-Pacific aviation market continues to experience strong growth in passenger traffic and increased demand for efficient airport infrastructure, MAHB’s strengthened leadership team is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Malaysia’s ambitions of becoming a major aviation and connectivity hub in the region.
With new leadership, continued executive stability and ongoing investment in airport development, MAHB is positioning itself to drive the next phase of transformation across Malaysia’s aviation infrastructure ecosystem.
