Purchase includes 49% stake in Iceland-based ACMI operator as Atlas strengthens worldwide cargo and leasing capabilitiesPurchase, New York/Reykjavik: Atlas Air Worldwide has completed its previously announced acquisition of a 49% minority stake in Iceland-based freighter operator Air Atlanta, marking a significant step in expanding its global air cargo and aircraft leasing operations. The transaction, first announced in May 2026, also includes a separate agreement under which Titan Aviation Holdings, a wholly owned Atlas Air Worldwide subsidiary, will acquire the aircraft owned by the Air Atlanta Group. The aircraft will subsequently be leased back to Air Atlanta’s airline companies, allowing the carrier to continue operating its existing fleet without disruption. The completion of the transaction has been confirmed by Atlas Air Worldwide in an official announcement.

Strengthening Global Cargo Capacity

Headquartered in Iceland, with operating platforms in both Iceland and Malta, Air Atlanta is one of the world’s established providers of Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) leasing services. In addition to ACMI operations, the airline offers Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (CMI) services, passenger and cargo charter flights, and aviation management services for customers across international markets.Air Atlanta currently operates a fleet of 14 widebody freighters, comprising Boeing 747 Freighters and Boeing 777 Freighters, alongside four Boeing 777 passenger aircraft, making it an important provider of long-haul cargo capacity for airlines, logistics companies and freight operators.Atlas said the strategic partnership expands its global operating platform while enhancing access to widebody freighter capacity across key international markets.

Long-Term Strategic Partnership

Michael Steen, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Worldwide, said the completion of the investment reflects a shared commitment to strengthening both companies’ market positions.“We are pleased to complete our previously announced strategic investment in Air Atlanta and welcome the Air Atlanta team as a valued strategic partner. This milestone reflects our shared commitment to delivering exceptional service to customers and supporting the long-term success of both organisations.”Baldvin Hermannsson, Chief Executive Officer of Air Atlanta, described the agreement as the beginning of a new phase for the airline.“This strategic relationship marks an exciting new chapter for Air Atlanta. Together with Atlas, we are well positioned to build on our complementary strengths, expand opportunities and enhance value for our customers.”

Existing Management to Retain Operational Control

Despite the strategic investment, Air Atlanta will continue to operate under its existing management team and organisational structure.Following completion of the transaction, the airline’s management will retain a 51% controlling interest in the operating companies, ensuring operational continuity while allowing both organisations to collaborate on commercial growth initiatives and international business opportunities. The structure enables Atlas Air Worldwide to benefit from Air Atlanta’s operational expertise while preserving the airline’s established business model and customer relationships.

Leadership Transition

As part of the transaction, Hannes Hilmarsson, Executive Chairman of the Air Atlanta Group, will step down after serving in leadership positions with the company for two decades. The transition marks the end of a significant chapter in Air Atlanta’s history as the airline embarks on its next phase of growth through its partnership with Atlas Air Worldwide.

Expanding Global Air Cargo Presence

The acquisition reinforces Atlas Air Worldwide’s strategy of expanding its global freighter network and strengthening its position in the ACMI, charter and aircraft leasing markets.By combining Atlas’ extensive international cargo network with Air Atlanta’s expertise in widebody freighter operations, the partnership is expected to create new opportunities for airlines, freight forwarders and logistics providers seeking flexible long-haul cargo capacity. The transaction also highlights continued consolidation and strategic investment within the global air cargo sector as operators seek to enhance fleet flexibility, improve operational resilience and meet growing demand for international freight services.
