Brussels Airport has entered into a strategic partnership with United Airlines and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) to strengthen transatlantic pharmaceutical logistics through the creation of a dedicated cargo corridor between Belgium and the United States.

The agreement, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), will establish a streamlined and standardised pharmaceutical supply chain linking Brussels with Washington Dulles International Airport. The initiative is designed to enhance reliability, efficiency, and compliance in the transport of high-value, temperature-sensitive medical products.

Dedicated corridor to streamline pharma logistics

The newly established corridor will focus on aligning operational processes between the two airports, ensuring consistent handling standards and improved coordination across the supply chain. The goal is to create a seamless flow for pharmaceutical shipments, reducing transit complexity and strengthening product integrity during transport.

United Airlines will act as the primary carrier on the route, operating daily services between the two hubs. These flights already carry significant volumes of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, reflecting strong and growing demand for transatlantic healthcare logistics.

Leveraging Belgium’s pharma export strength

Belgium plays a central role in global pharmaceutical trade, ranking among the world’s leading exporters of pharmaceutical products. Brussels Airport, in particular, has developed a strong reputation as a specialised pharma logistics hub, supported by certified handling processes and a well-established cargo community.

Airport leadership emphasised that collaboration across stakeholders is critical to maintaining high standards in pharmaceutical transport. By aligning procedures and sharing best practices with partners in the United States, the initiative aims to further enhance efficiency and reinforce the integrity of sensitive cargo flows.

Supporting growth in Virginia’s life sciences sector

On the US side, the partnership is expected to support continued expansion in Virginia’s pharmaceutical and advanced manufacturing industries. Increasing investment in the state’s life sciences sector is driving demand for reliable international logistics connections, particularly with established European markets.

VEDP highlighted that enhanced air connectivity is essential to enabling trade growth and ensuring resilient supply chains for high-value goods. The new corridor is positioned to strengthen Virginia’s access to European markets while supporting long-term industrial development.

Cargo’s strategic role in airline networks

For United Airlines, the initiative underscores the growing importance of cargo within passenger airline operations. While passenger services remain the primary driver of route networks, cargo continues to play a critical role in enhancing route profitability and network efficiency.

The airline noted that leveraging available bellyhold capacity for pharmaceutical shipments provides additional revenue streams while supporting essential global supply chains.

Strengthening transatlantic supply chain resilience

The collaboration reflects a broader industry trend toward developing dedicated logistics corridors for high-value and sensitive cargo. By integrating infrastructure, operational standards, and stakeholder coordination, such initiatives aim to reduce risk and improve reliability in global supply chains.

With increasing demand for temperature-controlled transport and strict regulatory compliance, the Brussels–Washington corridor is expected to serve as a model for future pharma logistics partnerships.
