During H1 2021, Munich Airport managed 2.2 million travellers.

Germany’s Munich Airport International (MAI) has handled 12.5 million passengers last year, an increase exceeding 12% or 1.4 million compared to 2020.

This ‘positive trend’ in 2021 traffic was attributed to the lifting of travel curbs.

However, the reported passenger footfall constitutes only slightly over a quarter of its numbers recorded in 2019.

The airport managed 2.2 million passengers during H1 2021, with the numbers surging to 10.3 million in H2 2021.

Last October, MIA registered the highest level of passenger volume, with the same number of travellers reported during H1 2021.

Flughafen München GmbH CEO Jost Lammers said: “As soon as the pandemic situation allows for it, people want to travel again. We also see this uninterrupted demand as an encouraging sign in regard to the new year.

“Even if the next several weeks are still challenging in consideration of the anticipated impact of the Omicron variant, we see excellent prospects for another considerable increase in flights and passenger demand in the summer flight schedule.”

In December 2020, Munich recorded 245,000 passengers, which increased by six times to 1.5 million in December 2021.

In addition, MIA processed 167,000 metric tonnes of air freight in 2021, marking a 15% increase from the prior year.

In October last year, Munich Airport and Urban-Air Port partnered for the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) ground infrastructure and airport operations.
