The Lincoln Airport in Nebraska, US will be transformed into an air cargo hub through a $65m investment led by Governor-elect Jim Pillen, the Lincoln Airport Authority (LNK), and Burrell Aviation, a division of The Burrell Group.

The project, which is set to begin in 2023, will involve the development of 210,000 sq ft of cargo facilities at the airport through a long-term lease between Burrell Aviation and LNK that will not exceed 50 years.

Burrell Aviation will also be responsible for securing anchor tenants interested in making the Lincoln Airport a key hub for air cargo and other aviation-related activities.

Governor-elect Pillen stated, “I am excited about this opportunity and the growth it will bring to Lincoln.

“This is another example of business stepping up and investing in the future of Nebraska.

“Burrell Aviation and its partners have the resources to invest, develop, and operate next-generation aviation facilities and infrastructure that will reap benefits for our state.”

The development is based on the belief that e-commerce will drive growth and that regional airports with available facilities and logistical support will be able to capitalize on the flow of goods with improved efficiency compared to larger, more congested airports, particularly those located near major population centers.

The Lincoln Airport, which was previously an Air Force base, has one of the longest runways of any commercial airport in the US, making it attractive for large cargo operations.
