The airport’s strategic membership will support cross-industry collaboration on healthcare supply-chain resilience, innovation and sustainability.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has joined Pharma.Aero as a Strategic Member, strengthening its involvement in industry-wide initiatives aimed at improving the movement of pharmaceutical products and other healthcare shipments across global supply chains.

Announced on October 6, 2026, the membership gives Schiphol an active role in the organisation’s strategic discussions and collaborative projects, bringing the airport together with pharmaceutical manufacturers, logistics providers, airlines, technology companies and academic institutions.

The move reflects the growing importance of cooperation in pharmaceutical air cargo, where temperature control, shipment visibility, regulatory compliance and reliable handling are essential to protecting product quality throughout transit.

Schiphol connects approximately 300 destinations worldwide and benefits from an established cargo community and a strategic location within Europe. Through its participation in Pharma.Aero, the airport aims to contribute its operational expertise and network reach to initiatives focused on making healthcare logistics more reliable, predictable and resilient.

Frank Van Gelder, secretary general of Pharma.Aero, welcomed Schiphol’s decision to take a more active role in the organisation, highlighting the airport’s international connectivity and ambition to strengthen its pharmaceutical logistics capabilities. He said the partnership would help build industry knowledge and advance best practices across healthcare supply chains.

Eduard Molkenboer, head of Schiphol Cargo, said the membership aligned with the airport’s ambition to work with partners on innovative and future-ready healthcare supply chains. He pointed to the airport’s cargo community, European location and cooperation with Maastricht Aachen Airport as strengths it could bring to the collaboration.

Pharmaceutical logistics requires coordination well beyond the airport itself. Products may pass through manufacturers, specialist handling facilities, freight forwarders, airlines, customs authorities and distribution networks before reaching their destination. Weaknesses at any stage can affect shipment integrity and delivery reliability.

Schiphol already supports pharmaceutical and medical-device transport through its established cargo infrastructure. Its Pharma Gateway Amsterdam initiative brings together logistics companies, customs and regulatory authorities to improve the handling of pharmaceutical shipments. Temperature-controlled facilities, trained personnel and tracking systems are important elements of this operating environment.

Through Pharma.Aero, Schiphol will have an additional platform to exchange expertise with other parts of the global healthcare logistics community and contribute to projects addressing shared industry challenges.

The priorities include innovation, sustainability and resilience—areas that are increasingly important as pharmaceutical supply chains become more interconnected and demand dependable transport across international markets.

For the air cargo sector, Schiphol’s membership reinforces the role of airports as active participants in developing healthcare logistics standards and practices, rather than simply providing infrastructure for the movement of goods. The value of the partnership will ultimately depend on how industry discussions translate into practical improvements in shipment handling, coordination and supply-chain performance.
