Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) continues to experience robust growth in cargo volumes, marking six consecutive months of double-digit year-on-year increases, driven by a surge in export cargo. In June, HKIA reported a 17.6% rise in cargo volumes, reaching 417,000 tonnes, according to data from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). Export cargo alone saw a significant boost of 24.9% compared to the same month last year. The airport authority noted that cargo traffic to and from North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia saw the most substantial increases during this period.Over the past year, HKIA’s cargo throughput rose by 14.8% on a 12-month rolling basis, totaling 4.7 million tonnes. This performance helped HKIA maintain its status as the world’s busiest cargo airport for the 13th time since 2010. In 2023, the airport recorded a 3.3% year-on-year increase in cargo volumes, bringing the total to 4.3 million tonnes. The growth at HKIA is partly attributed to the booming e-commerce sector and significant investments by stakeholders. Recent developments include the Cathay Cargo Terminal’s expanded intermodal cargo handling operations between HKIA and Dongguan Logistics Park. Additionally, AAHK has partnered with China’s Dongguan Port Group to create a sea-air intermodal transshipment facility. UPS has also entered into an agreement with AAHK to build a 20,000 square meter facility with direct aircraft access, situated near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
